Congressman Mike Bishop (R-MI8) really, really loves Betsy DeVos. He and pal Congressman and foreclosure king David Trott (R-11) just can’t stop singing her praises. I’m sure her underwriting of the Michigan Republican Party and Republican politicians in our state has nothing to do with it.
Knowing that DeVos’ Secretary of Education nomination is looking shaky, Bishop and Trott ran to the conservative Detroit News to try and shore up support.
President Trump’s selection of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education reiterates his deep commitment to challenging the status quo and building a better future for our children.
Stop – go grab the Maalox. You’ll want it. I’ll wait.
For three decades, DeVos and her husband, Dick, have donated their money and dedicated their time to fight for children stuck in underperforming public schools. This is a labor of love for the DeVos family.
Not to mention a money-making opportunity for her friends. Did you know most charter schools in Michigan are run by for-profit corporations? It’s a fact. …
DeVos has the backbone and independence to shake things up. She has proven time and again that she has the mettle to implement innovative methods that will improve education for all. As members of Congress and parents who work with our K-12 system today, we respect and greatly appreciate the tireless work of all our educators. This is not an attack on public schools; this is about making sure every child has the opportunity to succeed, no matter their community or background.
The weird thing is, they’ve probably made themselves believe some of this.
Where to start? She hasn’t proven anything about improving educations. Charter schools are not inherently better than traditional public schools, and they don’t produce better results. In places where they’ve been allowed to proliferate, they’ve undermined public school districts while producing crappy results of their own – a lose-lose-win where there community and students lose, and the for-profit charter operator wins.
If DeVos really cared about children, like Bishop keeps insisting she does, she’d care about that. But she doesn’t. She keeps pushing ahead with her efforts to weaken and kill off public school districts and replace them with charter schools run by her friends and their for-profit corporations.
Of course Bishop is OK with this. In the past two years, she’s stuffed $43,200 into Bishop’s pockets, given $245,000 to the Trump Victory Fund, $282,000 to the Michigan Republican Party, and $1,851,200 to the Republican National Committee. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. In all, she’s put spent more than $14 million on her pet Republicans and causes in the past two years.
No wonder Bishop would rather stand up for DeVos than listen to you. Don’t let him get away with it.
