Tim Walberg is trying very hard to thread the needle between all-out fascism and good ol’ fashioned American freedom.
Finally making a statement on Trump’s disgraceful Muslim ban, Walberg had this to say to MLive:
Keeping the American people safe is our solemn duty and that includes robust vetting procedures to ensure those entering our country do not pose a threat to our national security. A temporary pause on refugee admissions from terrorist hotspots will allow the administration to thoroughly review and strengthen our screening processes to ensure the necessary safeguards are in place. The administration should offer further clarity so that green card holders and those who have served alongside our troops on the battlefield are not affected. It is important that we improve our vetting policies to protect our citizens, while at the same time continuing our nation’s long held tradition of defending religious liberty and providing a compassionate and welcoming safe haven to persecuted individuals seeking freedom.
Nope. It doesn’t work like that. You can’t preserve a “long held tradition of defending religious liberty” while at the same time trying to keep people of one religion out. It’s not liberty, Walberg. That’s fascism.
