Michigan’s own U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg (R-MI7) took the bold step recently of standing against women’s health care when he testified in favor of stripping federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
The resolution would be filibuster-proof in the Senate, raising the likelihood that the measure will pass. And that prospect has Walberg dizzy with joy and ecstatic at the thought of denying women access to affordable Pap smears, breast exams and birth control, all in the name of fighting the legal right to abortion.
While Planned Parenthood doesn’t use federal funds for abortion, Republicans argue any money given to the organization still supports the procedure.
“We should invest in women’s health, not abortion. Abortion is not healthcare,” Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) said Tuesday during his testimony at the hearing.
“The federal government should not incentivize the practice by undermining the authority of states.”
So much wrong with this, Timmy. Abortion is women’s health, just ask any woman who had to make the agonizing choice to end an unviable pregnancy. Or, really, any woman who needed an abortion after sexual assault. Or who simply decided that she was not ready to become a parent. A woman’s ability to control her fertility is part and parcel to her ability to control her life and her future. Any attempts to rob her of that control is an attempt to rob her of her future. It’s really that simple.
Make sure you let him know that the next time you talk to him.
